Connecting the World Through Video Communications

Effective communications is the key to success in today’s fast-paced business environment. Videoconferencing is rapidly becoming the preferred communications tool to help businesses stay in touch with their employees and their customers the world over. By combining broadcast-quality video with high-speed digital telephony equipment, videoconferencing technology allows users thousands miles apart to exchange information or collaborates on projects with the same efficiency as face-to-face meetings. Even small investments in videoconferencing can yield significant dividends through increased productivity, an equation that has led nearly every major corporation in the United States to implement videoconferencing as part of their communications infrastructure. Non-routine business processes can benefit from the application of videoconferencing and develop proprietary technology-based solutions that increase productivity and reduce costs.

Video communications is using appropriately equipped end user workstations to hold two-way interactive videoconferences. Video communications play a key role in today’s business. The manager responsible for them must understand the technology sufficiently to be able to deal effectively with vendors of communications products and services and to make cost-effective choices among the growing array of options.

I agree that the electronic meeting system is a growing method of electronic office communication. Electronic meeting system involve the use of video and audio communications to allow conferences and meetings to be held with participants who may be scattered across a room, building, a country, or the globe. Reducing the need to travel to and from meetings should save employee time, increase productivity, and reduce travel expenses and energy consumption. Video communication in the text explained that session are held in realtime, with major participants being televised while participants at remote sites usually take part in voice input of questions and responses. It can also consist of using closed circuit television to multiple small groups, instead of television broadcasting to reach large groups at multiple sites.

Video communications is becoming a significant work alternative at major corporations and a common approach for many independent professionals. Some people refer it as the creation of virtual office. According to the textbook, traditionally, the technology has been used as a one-way delivery system of entertainment programs. Now, with the availability of high capacity transmission links and networks, it has an increasing business application, most notably videoconferencing. Video communication seems to be most attractive to people whose jobs involve a lot of individual work, such as programmers, system analysts, writers, consultants, and so on. It is especially helpful for handicapped persons and working parents of young children.  Video communication is also being promoted as a way to conserve resources that would have been used to commute to work by cars and other means of transportation.
